How to eliminate weedy shrubs

I have a few weedy shrubs in my yard that have been here since we moved in 10yrs ago. I've cut them back a few times, but not sure what is the best way to get rid of them. I don't know their names, but they seem to have sprung up on their own and are mixed in among other desirable shrubs & trees. I'm guessing I need to do some digging, but wondered if it would be easier to kill them somehow - won't a dead stump be easier to dig up? I'm thinking there is something that can coat the stump to kill it off. One of them is right up against a large pine tree and don't want to use anything that will hurt the pine, but I'm also not sure I can dig up all of it's roots. I've just never learned this part of maintaining my yard.

cut at ground level.. and apply 100% roundup [which is 40% from the container] or stump killer to the cambian layer ...

it will all rot.. no need to go diggin in the good plants ...

Thanks Ken, I didn't know Roundup could be used on shrubs. I don't use it much, but have some leftover. Wondering if the stump killer would be better for the one that is right up against a pine tree, though I can't imagine Roundup could take down a big old pine tree.

roundup has NO effect on bark ... unless you somehow scar the pine... there is no way for it to effect the pine ... that is why we cut the shrub .. and apply it to the green layer inside ...

btw ... many aggressive shrubs refuse to die.. and if new shoots come up next spring.. snip them.. and re-apply ...

There was a big nasty patch of forsythia and multiflora rose here. We cut it to the ground and started mowing and just kept mowing. After about five years it is tame and dead and we're planting grass. Would have been faster with Roundup. There was some good stuff under that tangle though - jack in the pulpit seedlings and a little redbud tree.
