Need recommendation for short shrubs

I'm looking for a combo of shrubs to plant in the flower bed that sits against my house. It's 17' long and 5' deep and East facing. There's a window 3' above that opens outwards, so the shrubs need to stay shorter than that.

I want something that will retain color in the winter, so I've been looking at a variety of evergreens and others like Virginia Sweetspire that have the red stems.

Shrubs that need to be pruned are fine with me.

Any suggestions for shorter shrubs?

get ye to the conifer forum ... and forget about shrubs that stay under 3 feet ... and less than 3 feet wide at the same time ...

you will want to focus on mini conifers..
