Maximizing of fruiting is achieved by planting several other specimens of the same species, that are unrelated to the first one - save for being the same species. In other words, planting multiples of the same clone will get you nowhere, it is just additional fragments of the same plant. Many seem not to get this, plant genetic duplicates for the purposes of cross-pollination. With viburnums, not only is it often necessary to have more than one clone present, you may need several genetically distinct individuals in the same planting to get a full load of fruit.

That said, solitary individuals of this particular species of viburnum are often seen with some fruit present.

I have a common Viburnum trilobum next to my Redwing, which greatly improved Redwings fruiting. I originally planted these maybe 20' apart, but moved them closer to get better results. So far, both bloom times consistently overlap. However I'm not thrilled w/ the shape & growth rate of the common - especially sitting next to the near-perfect Redwing, but they are reliable together.
My mom also has a Redwing (from same nursery as mine)in her yard with no other Viburnums planted - and it fruits almost as well as mine. I'm sure there's a neighbor nearby with a mate, but she hasn't located it yet & it must be quite a distance. (Bees in her neighborhood must be smarter...)
I had tried V. opulus, but the bloom time wasn't in sync so I removed it, plus I learned opulus can be invasive in some areas.

I have v. trilobum also and planted Onondaga next to it. They bloom at the same time and seem to be pollinating each other. Onondaga should work to pollinate Redwing also as long as they bloom at the same time.

that is very interesting. I planted several vib. Wentworth and they always had a prolific amount of fruit. Quite spectular. Unfortunately the viburnum borers liked them too and all had to be be removed. BooHoo.
