| I have 3 Needle Point Hollys, Ilex Cornuta 'Needle Point", in my garden that were planted in tree form. 5 years ago. I keep the lower shoots trimmed off and just have a circlular top in foliage. Last summer, I noticed on one of the plants, one of the 4 major trunks had died. I cut it out and in the fall, I noticed another trunk had died and I cut it out also. Yesterday, as I was walking around, I noticed that another trunk is dying! The strange part about this is that it happens suddenly. I have a small yard and I am walking around in it almost daily, and suddenly this plant has parts that are dying. The other 2 plants are healthy and growing. I trim these about once or twice per year to maintain the shape and to control the height, but this is only trimming the outer edges and not doing any "heavy" pruning. I notice that the bark on the trunk is splitting open and falling off and the evergreen leaves turn brown. Can anyone help me with this? |

| It's impossible to say what's causing the problem without more info. If the decline is as sudden as you indicate, it could be Armillariella mellea (Armillaria root rot) or one of the other root rots that cause rapid above ground symptoms. Have you tried to examine the root system supporting one of the dead trunks? Is you soil well draining? Any signs of fungal growth? Are there any other symptoms you've noticed? You might consider contacting your local Ag Extension Office and making arrangements for them to examine the plant. |
