I've had a beauty Berry bush for 5 years now and it Blooms great, but... hardly any berries in the fall. Looks like they fall off before they mature. Not making it into August. Is there anything I can do for next season?

Cut it back hard in very early spring. Mine fruited much better this year after doing that. The berries , however, disappear quickly as the birds (robins especially) devour them. The only ones that last are those at the ends of the branches-too delicate to support the birds' weight.

Latin (botanical) name please. Are we talking, Callicarpa dichotoma, americana, bodnieri? C. dichotoma can be cut back yearly. Don't think it's an especially good idea with the other species.

Yes Callicarpa dichotoma was on the label. It seems like every year the top branches dry out and the buds start lower in the bush, about a foot off the ground. It Blooms very well, just the berries seem to fall off before maturing. I don't think its a bird problem. It seems that as soon as the berry starts too form, it falls off or the flower just falls off. There are alot of bees on the flowers too.

With the relatively cool spring and summer here (Chicago area), some plants leafed out, bloomed, and set fruit a little later than usual, including my Callicarpa dichotoma. Then we had 2 nights of frost the weekend before last, which zapped the leaves and fruit before many of the fruits had turned purple--so, no beautiful display of fruit this year. First time that's happened in the 8 or so years I've had the plant.
