Name that shrub

I know this is going to be a long shot, but I have to try.

I live in Indiana (zone 5) and yesterday I saw a shrub that had purple flowers on it. I was driving by and the shrub was set far from the road, so I didn't get a good look at it. I don't even know if the purple things were flowers or leaves!

Anyway, the shrub was about 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide and completely covered with very purple flowers or leaves. Does anyone know what this could be? Could I have been dreaming it?

If the thing were smaller, I would have assumed it was just a mum, but this thing was huge.

Thanks for your help!

Perhaps an aster?

can asters get that large? I don't think I've ever seen one taller than 1 or 1.5 feet.

I have asters four feet plus tall. There are no purple blooming shrubs in fall in zone 5. In fact, I can't think of any fall blooming shrub in zone 5.

thanks laceyvail--I didn't think there were any fall-blooming shrubs in this zone--though my quince and my forsythia are trying it this year.

I don't think the berries would have shown up at the distance I'm imagining, but there are certainly purple berried shrubs now: callicarpa.

I also have a three foot tall georgeous purple/blue aster blooming right now. I could imagine in full sun it could be taller and billowly.
