Suddenly hooked on Hamamelis...

and its not about the flowers. Those are just a bonus.

I love the branching structure and leaf texture of these plants. Plus the fall color!

With that said are there any particular varieties that have strong fall color?

I was told some Hamamelis x intermedia can be hit or miss based on the parentage. If its strong on the H. japonica side you may get more reliable fall color.

I have 'Girard's Purple' and 'Arnold's Promise' both of which have had good reliable fall color. GP is more red/orange and AP is more yellow/orange.

My 'Jelena' on the other has had yellowish brown or simply put poor color.

I've tracked down Hamamelis vernalis Autumn Joy and Autumn Embers has having good red fall color which isn't typical as you'll see yellow. So I'm set with the H. vernalis group.

Any other Hamamelis x intermedia that you've seen with vibrant and relablie fall color?

My 'Rochester' is a very nice clear yellow right now!
Best year for color yet.

Probably has more H. mollis then? Looks like it has nice flowers.

Don't know the parentage- I just bought it because it had orange flowers and was named Rochester (I have an orange cat named Rochester).
The flowers have been a bit of a disappointment as the old leaves hang on and obscure them, but the fall color was certainly an unexpected surprise!

I got a 'james wells' - Supposedly hardy to zone 6, I'm probably pushing my luck a bit.
