confused forsythia

I planted a Gold Tide forsythia about a month ago. Soon after it went in the ground, a few flowers came out. I didn't pay much attention to them because I figured the plant was just confused by the transplanting process.

However, I looked at the plant today and noticed that it's setting buds all over the branches, most of which still have leaves on them. Some of the buds are just starting to open.

I assume that I'll lose the buds in the winter, but does that mean I won't get new buds in the spring?

I can't answer your question either, but when I first saw your title, I wondered to myself if it was about 'Gold Tide'. I have several mature Gold Tides and in its early years I thought it was confused. It kept sending up tall upright shoots and I was afraid it was confused that it didn't know it was supposed to be a groundcover.

I just kept pruning them out and it settled down fine.

So just a warning for next couple of years to watch out for that. You wouldn't want it to revert to a tall forsythia.

As far as the blooms and the buds, it could have to do with where it came from and where it was grown. It must be spring somewhere?

They do force flowering easily. Last year we had a huge ice storm in mid-December before things had really frozen well. I had lots of broken forsythia branches (not Gold Tide, but the real thing). I figured I had nothing to lose to bring them in the house to see if I got flowers. I did. Apparently they do not need a cold period to generate flowers.

Did you recently have a warm spell? Maybe they came from a colder place and now they are in a warmer place??? all speculation.

Buds of early-flowering shrubs like forsythia mature so early in the growing season that some are ready to go in fall.

I often see fall blooms on forsythia. There are usually some left over for spring too.

@wendyb The forsythia came from a local nursery and I think it had been there for several months. But thanks for the advice on the pruning. I do not want a tall forsythia!

@bboy @harryshoe Good to know that my forsythia is not alone in the early blooming world. I'll just enjoy the flowers when I can!

Thanks for the answers everyone.
