 o
oleander's toxicity

The other day I purchased 10 oleanders, they were reduced to clear and I had what I thought was the ideal place for them in open space out front and down the side of my property.

As I was outside planting them one of my neighbors stopped for a chat and said how beautiful oleanders get then asked if I was aware that they are toxic ( we have young children and our front is somewhat of a playground for the local children). I looked at the tag that came with the plants which said nothing about this so checked the Internet. Depending on which site I read these plants are anything from deadly to causing irritation.

I returned the plants just in case, I have trouble getting my children to eat salad so I doubt they would eat anything off a plant, but I thought even the smallest chance is not worth it.

Ok sorry for the long intro, my question in the desire for knowledge is-

Are these plants that deadly or is there a lot of hype?

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Nigel

My understanding is that they are quite toxic, but so are a great many other garden plants, including yews, which are ubiquitous in the north.

RE: oleander's toxicity

It's no hype. While a great many plants are toxic to some degree, oleander ranks extremely high. Ingestion of a single leaf has been reported to be fatal. All parts of the plant are considered to be highly toxic, including the smoke generated from burning stems or dried leaves. Even contact with bare skin can cause inflammation to those who may be sensitive.

Although it is a widely planted and very popular ornamental shrub in warmer climates, it is a very good idea NOT to plant it where kids or pets can easily encounter it.
