Coppicing Rhus?

In Piet Oudolf's book "Planting: A New Perspective" there are some examples of coppiced shrubs being planted among grasses and wildflowers. The ones I remember are Cotinus coggyria and Rhus typhina.
Has anyone tried this sort of thing, especially with R. typhina or other Rhus species? I'm wondering whether it's possible to keep such a planting from getting completely out of control. I would expect to coppice them down to 6" or so every year or two. My main worry though would be that it would be hard to keep them from taking over the whole yard by root suckering.
Maybe it's the sort of thing that really need to be done in a much larger area -- or in a situation like Oudolf's in the High Line park in NYC where the beds are narrow and bounded by concrete.
