Considering the location probably Quercus chrysolepis. That's assuming the redwoods are growing natively, within their natural range.

Seedling is likely to be one of the evergreen oaks, at any rate.

I'll start the ball rolling with Quercus (an oak). I'm sure others will come along and suggest a species.

There's something else alongside but I can't really see it clearly enough to be sure what it is. The leaves look alternate so not Ligustrum (Privet.)

A geographical location would be helpful, please.

Oh, I'm so excited! If it is an oak, I'm going to try and transplant it and keep it. It's amazing how many growing things sprout up below these coastal redwoods!

The leaf pattern reminds me of some type of a holly bush? But not a quercus. .... anybody else have a idea? .... poison oak.... poison ivy.....?

Due to the stickiness of the ether between here and the US bboy got in first. We both said this is a Quercus species ie a true oak. That part of the id is incontrovertible. It isn't a holly, despite the superficial similarity in leaf shape. Many oaks have leaves of that shape. Nor is it poison oak which is Toxicodendron, and not an oak at all. It is totally unlike poison ivy.

BTW bboy is an expert and knows what he is talking about. Have you checked the species he suggested against online information?

Could it just be Quercus agrifolia?

That you guys. In checking the possibilities the leaf pattern seems to me it is a quercus agrifolia and I will be attempting to relocate it to a container and grow it. That you. Im so excited!

That photo could have been taken in numerous spots in my garden and it would be Q. agrifolia. That one is probably small enough for a successful transplant but if not just collect some acorns and grow some from seed. If they are started in pots they can exist for several years that way until they are large enough to set out. They are often clumsy about making a leader so you may have to encourage them by nipping back some of the long laterals.
