I posted in the conifer forum but never got an answer so I will try here.
I had taken out a couple of library books about gardening with conifers and saw some pictures of combinations that I wish would work for my situation but I don't know if they will.
I have been growing a 3 year old windbreak of mixed spruces, shaped like an "L" to counter the NW winds that predominate at my farm. Most of the year, the site is problem free, but in the spring it can get water-logged. The land has a certain type of underlying rock strata which "swells" in the heavier spring rains and makes the water table rise. Even though the area is gently sloping and ends at a ditch it can get quite soggy on occasion for a week or more. The spruces are doing just fine, but I have lost a few deciduous shrubs and some pines that couldn't tolerate the spring runoff.
Given these conditions. are there any coniferous shrubs that I could plant around the outside of my (young- 4 ft tall) spruces? I'd love to have a color/shape counterpoint to the trees, something spreading and softer looking. Evergreen options? |
