Part shade to shade winter interest suggestions with pictures

| I am looking for some suggestions for shrubs in a part-shade to shady area, under high-branched ash trees, decent soil, eastern exposure, morning filtered sun, late afternoon filtered sun, pretty protected area. I am looking for winter interest, as well as good growth habits for all seasons. The background is Hemlocks and Nellie Stevens Hollys (neighbors)which makes for a great dark green situation. I view it mostly from my deck so I see it all the time. The area I need ideas on is infront of the hemlocks over (left) to the ash and yew. Approx 40 linear ft. Maybe 8 to 10 shrubs or less.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

| Azaleas, rhododendrons, Sarcococca hookeriana humilis, Hellebores, Arum italicum pictum, Mahonia repens. Corylopis for shape and late winter/early spring bloom. |

I would strongly consider a Pieris (Pieris japonica). This is a very "showy" shrub that keeps its foliage through the winter. Very colourful, spring foliage with racemes of white bell shaped flowers. It benefits in a protected, shady situation. "Google" the above shrub for more information. Ian |

| Agree with the previous posts. I would also add Kalmias (Mountain Laurel) and hardy Camellias. |

Camellias. Ice Angels. Tall, evergreen all year, beautiful foliage, blooms through the winter. I wish I had part shade, I would have one. |
