| I let a dwarf inkberry get way out of control. I meant it to be a 3 foot round topiary and it's now close to a 4.5 foot bush...which appears to be its natural state as a dwarf.
Is there any way I can prune it back to the size I want? And can I prune it this late in the year? Thanks for any help.

| i dont know about the timing.. but google 'rejuvenation pruning of flowering shrubs' ... this is the basis for proper rejuvenation ... [if it has berries.. it has to have flowers] the link below is how i did a spirea.. by late summer it was back to half size .. i dont know if you can get this carried away with an inkberry.. or whether you will need to do the 3 year system ... i am sure others will chime in ... a picture of your plant would sure help us.. and trust me.. there is always a way to do it ... good luck ken |

| Not all flowering shrubs can be pruned with rejuvenative pruning. If Ilex glabra (one of many different plants referred to as inkberry, but probably the most likely one) is what you have, it can/should be pruned that way. The best time to do it is late winter. Typically, removal of one-third of the branches is recommended, but, if the shrub is healthy to start with, you might be able to get by with even more. Choose the older, more scraggly branches for removal. |

| i always start with the largest 1/3 of the branches .. measured at 3 inches from the ground or so ... and remove those.. then see what is left.. and perhaps take a few more if its shape is all out of whack ... ken |
