I want to buy some summer snowflake viburnums for a planting along a fence. The tag says they have a 4'-5' height, and 4'-5' spread. Every other place on the internet says they get anywhere from 8' to 12' tall! This is such a huge discrepancy! I love the horizontal branching, but I need something that will not grow more than 5' tall. Anyone else have summer snowflakes?

You can prune them to keep somewhat smaller but I'd plan to see the higher numbers :-) We have a 'Summer Snowflake' in a display bed at my nursery that is trained like a tree - it is easily 15' tall. btw, the horizontal branching of the typical doublefile viburnum is not nearly as pronounced in 'Summer Snowflake'. It forms much more of a rounded crowned shrub. If the very horizontal branching habit is what you are shooting for, I'd choose 'Shasta'.

Shasta is gorgeous but it gets much bigger than you want, gardenplanter. Easily 12' high and 12' wide--probably more. I have one of those dimensions and I have seen them significantly larger. But what a sight in bloom....

most size ESTIMATES are at ten years .... what you need to do.. is google the common name ... find the latin name .. then add ANNUAL GROWTH RATE .... then scan down the page.. see link ... there you will find its annual growth rate of 12 to 18 inches per year ... so then we extrapolate that in 10 years it will be upwards of 12 to 18 feet tall [subject to yoru growing conditions] ... so your second set of info is probably closer to reality ... [did you know tags lie.. lol] ... then i will lead you to google 'REJUVENATION PRUNING of flowering shrubs' .. to learn how you keep a shrub to the size you wish ... all such shrubs are 'trainable' to whatever you want to make them... but for sure.. none of them are carefree forever ... good luck ken
