It's probably American witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana), which is an autumn bloomer. Not a problem, it's just the nature of the plant.

Jimbo I never thought of that. I was under the impression when i bought the plant that it was spring blooming and just hadn't bloomed because it was not old enough. At least now I can stop yelling at it and maybe the neighbors will stop looking at me like I'm nuts.

It's actually a quite interesting plant, at a time of year when there's not much else in bloom. Look at the flowers: On frosty mornings, the petals roll up, and then unfurl when the sun warms them. Apparently, they're working on ones that will cleanly drop their leaves before they bloom; better for a garden situation.

Thank you yes I agree it is a beautiful plant I was just dumbfounded that after all these years it finally bloomed and not when I thought it would.

Could not email jimbofeeny directly but want him, and anyone interested, about the clone of Hamamelis virginiana 'Harvest Moon'. It drops its leaves as it blooms, leaving just the flowers. A short bloom, but highly noticeable
It has done this both years I have had it here.

Jaco, it might have been a spring bloomer when you bought it. Maybe it was something like a Hamamelis x intermedia. Some are grafted onto H. virginiana. Some of the ones grafted are notorious for graft rejection. The top dies, but lots of new growth comes from the rootstock. In a few years you end up with only the rootstock. I kept mine, and vowed to not buy grafted Hamamelis again. One here in bloom.

D, I had thought of that myself, however, I never saw a period of any stress or leaf drop as in the plant dying, therefore I am pretty sure that I just did not have the variety I thought I had but thank you for your response.
