Are you talking about California wax myrtle?

Pacific wax myrtle is native only to the outer coast, quite near the beach. I have seen numbers of it at Ocean Shores, where it grows with Hooker willow to make a handsome pairing.

In South Carolina, wax myrtle has been advancing inland from our Atlantic Coastal dunes for decades. Today, wax myrtle is a common sight in the pinelands of the state's lower Piedmont. I collected wax myrtle seedlings in Greenwood and McCormick counties a number of years ago and have used those seedlings in landscaping in the upper Piedmont. Our wild birds relish wax myrtle berries and, then, scatter them far and wide, through the natural process of beshitting. Thus, the woodlands of the upper South Carolina Piedmont are now beginning to have wax myrtle colonies.
