Anyone heard of this variety? We bought 4 of these yaupon holly shrubs last week, they have a 'Color Spot' tag on them with that name but Googling yields no results. Do they retain their golden top year round or only in the Fall? They make a good looking hedge, would just like to know what to expect with them. Thanks for any info. :)

Would expect the 'Gold' to refer to the color of the berries, which are more usually red. I do not grow I. vomitoria, but the somewhat related I. verticillata, and they do not give me good Fall leaf color, but go from green to tarnished looking nothing and then they fall. I would check the websites for Nurseries Caroliniana or Woodlander's Nursery, and if they do not list the plant, you might e-mail or call, as they are most obliging, and might know about your particular form of I. vomitoria.

Thanks bogturtle, the leaves on the crown of these shrubs have a yellow coloring which looks quite nice (I'll post a pic once I get fresh camera batteries), hadn't thought the 'gold' might refer to the berries as well, thanks for the input and suggestion re nurseries.

If it has a "Color Spot" tag on it, why not contact Color Spot Nurseries? tj
Here is a link that might be useful: Hit the spot

If it's like the original golden vomitoria, the new growth is yellow...which greens up during the growing season. Females will have bright red berries.

Thanks tj and rhizo, bogturtle cleared up the mystery that it's an unusual clone of Ilex Vomitoria, here's a pic of the new hedge: No sign of berries yet, hope that doesn't mean they're males, red berries with the golden leaves would be so pretty.
