What smells sweet and is blooming now in MS?

I live in northwest Mississippi (zone 8a). In the last week I've walked by a couple of houses with some sort of sweet-smelling shrubs planted in a hedgerow near the street. They have tiny, off-white flowers. I think they are evergreens. I don't think they would be sweet olives or wintersweets. God bless.

Osmanthus fragrans (Tea Olive) would be my guess. Mine is blooming its head off right now, too.

Eleagnus ebingii?

Here is a link that might be useful: Eleagnus ebingii

I agree with rhizo. It sounds like tea olive (_Osmanthus fragrans_) or one of the other members of the _Osmanthus_ tribe. Our tea olives had their major flush of blooms a few weeks ago, but will be flushed with blooms again at different times during the fall, winter, and early spring. Of course, it could, as Flora suggests, be a form of _Eleagnus_, which produces sweetly-scented fall blossom that are off-white in color.

OOps, I didn't read chris's question very carefully. He/she indicated that sweet olive (tea olive?) might not be an option. Then, without any picture, or further comments from the original poster I guess the plant is probably Ugly-Agnus. Very sweet fragrance.
