 o
suggest a shrub for this area!

Can you suggest a shrub or two (or a nice grouping of 3-4 shrubs) that will work for this area?

Part shade (about 4-6 hours of midday sun)
Watered once a week (must be very drought tolerant!)
Flowers a plus - white? Yellow?
Variegated leaves a plus too.
Tough
Sloped area
Compact/dense - about 4'-5' tall or wide
Evergreen (but no conifers)
Zone 9

The other plants in the area are yarrows (white and yellow shades), creeping thyme, confederate jasmine (trellis arch), a mock orange, a standard rose on each side of the arch (one white, one yellow) and 2 very unhappy plants (wisteria and hydrangea) that have to go!

This area borders on a slope planted with agaves and cacti.

thanks!

How about Escallonia ssp.

I'm guessing you may be located in California (zone 9, agave and cactus), so I'd suggest using Carpenteria californica, bush anemone. It is a California native plant, evergreen, quite drought tolerant when established and somewhat shade tolerant. Large, white camellia-like flowers.

Other possibilities could include Convolvulus cneorum, Senecio greyii or manzanita (Arctostaphylos species).

Here is a link that might be useful: Carpenteria

Maybe Pittosporum? but don't know its water requirements.

Firebush - hamellia species. Not variegated, but does flower.
