Bottlebrush Buckeye (Aesculus parviflora)

Hi all, I read through most threads concerning this shrub, but none addresses my question. How long does it stay in bloom in a partial shade situation in zone 5? Can you give me some idea of how long they stay in bloom in your yard/area? I intend to plant two on the north side of a row of white pines that are loosing their lower branches, hence my desire for a shrub. The BB will also become a backdrop for a small statue (about 4ft tall), as seen in "Midnight in the garden of good and evil". The white flowers are more the icing on the cake of a good shrub, but who doesn't like icing, right? :-)

Anywhere from 2-4 weeks of bloom here. A very nice shrub, but does get huge fairly quickly. The more sun the more dense and compact it grows. The only drawback I can think of is that Japanese beetles seem to be very attracted to the blossoms and can damage them in short order.

I got three of these by mailorder, and they have yet to show any fast growth after nearly three years in the ground. I have them on a slope in poor soil, but heavily mulched. Sunlight conditions are part sun near pines and maples. So to answer your question... I have not even seen any blooms at all.

Aesculus parviflora prefers a rich, moist, well-drained soil. They will not perform in poor soil on a slope. In my area they bloom 2 weeks give or take.

This is a great plant all around. I've had parviflora and var serotina since October 2004. Parviflora was a bigger(3G) plant than serotina(1G) at the time of planting. The parviflora has had flowers since at least 2007, but serotina has yet to bloom. They are side by side, so there are minimal cultural/environmental differences. I thought I had notes about length of bloom time for parviflora, but all I have is date of first flowers. It was June 7 in 2008 and June 6 this year. I also have a note that says "in full bloom on June 15, 2007 with 22 inflorescences". You might consider using both to extend blooming season.
