Chopping debris for compost pile?

Stems and larger debris don't break down very quickly and I want to start chopping up larger pieces before adding them to my compost pile. Since I have back problems, I'm hoping someone might have some ideas on building a small "table" at the composting site and what would be the best kind of tool for chopping? Machete? Hatchet? How do you handle it?

Can you put it on the ground and run your lawn mower over it?

Place a layer of "sticks" on the ground and build compost pile on top of it. The more expensive alternative is to buy a shredder that can handle the stems and sticks.
If you place some Cinder blocks on top of each other with a sturdy wooden surface over them you could chop the stems with machete. 2c ?

I've got a potting bench with a chopping block and butcher knife close by---great for doing the chop chop on larger stems, etc........Lawn mower tends not to pick up things like canna stems, caster bean stems and some of the other larger flower parts.

Yes, I usually end up chopping with pruners and lopping shears which takes a long time. It is a pain with all the plants I have. Takes forever.

I have a shredder but usually use pruners and loppers to chop it into pieces and put those on the bottom of a new pile.
