Can anyone tell me what this is and if it does damage to plants?

Hi Kate. I believe the photo is a soldier fly larvae. These are beneficial in the compost pile (and good fish bait for the grandkids). The adult soldier flies do not eat and are not a problem at all (don't go into the house or bother anything). The larvae look "yucky", but are really helpful. Good luck. BG

well am i glad to hear that!cause i got a ton of those NASTY things in my pile,so it looks like me and the boys are going blue gill fishing tomorrow!
