I wish everyone a better New Year than the last. Maybe some of you had a great one. Great. I salute you anyway I am up and alive so am grateful for that.
? what do you do you do with your house stuff thru winter,do you just lay it on top of the compost pile or what. Everything is frozen here so it is hard to turn.

I just lay it right on top; some on top of my garden, some on top in my "bin." And I picture magical things happening when it thaws layer by layer by layer...

I have 4 worm bins made from totes in the basement. They get all the more juicy goodies. The rest like fish bones etc. are wrapped into small packages with newspaper and thrown on top of the pile for spring. No, critters are not a problem! They stay in their dens and homes around here during the winter.

My pile is frozen too, at least the outer layer. I use a lot of shredded or torn newspaper so I don't want to just lay the material on top - the pile is in a wind tunnel of sorts.

This year I'm trying a series of empty birdseed bags with slits, placed next to a temporary greenhouse that has a wire fence around it. The bags are open on the top so I can just keep adding. I'm hoping that the greenhouse will warm the bags up a bit so there will be some composting going on all winter and the contents will shrink. In the spring I'll empty them somewhere.

Inside the greenhouse would be better, but the zippers are malfunctioning and I'd rather keep it closed so the winds don't carry it off (I closed it up before the last hurricane warning and left it closed).

When it gets really cold (like today -17C with a windchill of -30C), I just put the stuff in an attached veranda and it freezes solid. When it warms up a bit (-10C ish) I take it all out to the tumblers and cover with additional leaves. Come spring, it thaws and it's good to go.

The stuff from work comes out in the empty coffee cans, they will sit frozen until spring and then I can empty them.

Throw in a raised bed or on the pile.
