| I've been reading here for years and I've learned that although it's very common for compost piles to catch fire, compost piles never catch fire. So don't worry (because there won't be a fire), but it's time to panic (because they're on the verge of bursting into flames). |

You might try getting out the hose and wetting the pile....as you are supposed to...or get out the rake and turn your pile...as you are supposed to...the steam from the pile isn't so unusual given that its been left to heat up. Fire! Hardly.....'where's there's smoke'....just shows somebody isn't doing what is called for. Before someone suggests they have had a home compost take fire.....let's see the evidence. He**, I've had my hand almost burned by putting it down deep into my bin....but that doesn't suggest anything but what it is...decompostion at work. |

| People often use steam to get wrinkles out of clothes rather than ironing or dry cleaning them. Maybe you should string a clothesline over the piles and advertise this as an anti-wrinkle service. Claire |

| When it comes to composting, and if it's this Al you're talking about, I readily, quickly, and enthusiastically acknowledge John as my better by far. ;o) Al |
