| When I opened a bag of mulch today, I found that some of the chips had turned black. Should I still use that mulch ? BTW I posted this question a few hours back but did not see it posted so I am reposting. Apologies if it appears twice |

Could it be they were bagged last year and are in the process of composting? I might just use them if there's no bad smell. Sunny |

| Looks like Zoro has been there. |

Was that mulch quite moist? Did the mulch have an offensive odor when you opened the bag? it looks like that mulch started to digest and in a sealed plastic bag that would be anaerobic, however, that would still be oaky touse as mulch. |

| Toss that section in the composter for extra "lovin"! Smell is probably the key to this unless it has an oily or chemical "feel" to it. |

| It looks like dyed mulch. Any chance the bagging operation was switching over from black dyed mulch, and you got a transitional bag? I wouldn't have any problem using it, even if it's decomposing. Organic material does that. :-D |

| Thank you all. There was no smell that I could detect. I was concerned that it may have been some kind of black mold. |

| Looks like a dead slime mold. Even when they're alive they're more ugly than detrimental. When they're dead they're pretty much harmless. |

| Fungi are generally beneficial, there are lots of them in the soil already, and only a few of them are actually bad for plants. Even if it was toxic black mold, it probably wouldn't hurt a thing as long as you don't mulch the inside of your house with it. :-D |
