 o
forest humus good for garden soil?

I have access to very black, crumbly forest floor soil. Some cattle grazed there about 50 years ago, but since then it's just been hardwood leaves (mostly oaks) decomposing on steep, rocky slopes. This black humus looks very different from the clay soil in my garden (Ozarks).

I've bagged up some of it and plan to mix it into my garden soil before I plant this spring. Can anyone think of any down side of doing this?

I've also set up some experiments (planting seeds in pots with 4 different kinds of soil as a test). We'll see what happens.

The major downside is that you would be removing that from the forest environment. What would be good for your garden would be a deteriment to the forest.

And what would be bad for the forest would be good for your garden.

If I needed the soil Id use it, the soil is great and the trees wont miss it a bit. We thinned out and got rid of a lot of old and dead trees (150) behind our house and robbed about 500 yards of the black soil from about 4 acres about 6 years ago and the tree are doing just fine.

Trees are very long lived plants that may not show signs of decline in such a short time as 6 years.
