| I had a plot tested by umass recently and while Ca, Mg, and K are all adequate, P is very low, 4ppm. Seems like an odd circumstance, doesn't it?
I grew corn there last season, and before that it had a cover of rye. before that I don't know except that for years it was in berries. The soil is silty loam. |
Follow-Up Postings:
| Phosphorus availability can be influenced by soil temperatures as well as the level of organic matter in the soil. When was the soil sample taken and what is the humus level of your soil? |
| I took the sample out of the ground in November; the OM tested quite low. |
| A quick way to get P up is to use fish meal on the soil if you are not into manufactured ferts. And a better way is to bury fish guts and waste for longer efficiency. |
| Depending on how long the air temperatures were quite cool the soil temperatures, at that time, could have been cool enough to affect Phosphorus availability and a low level of organic matter will also affect that. What I have seen on many of the soils I have had tested is that soils with low levels of OM most often will have low Phosphorus levels. |
