Wrong type of soil?

I have currently a 400W MH conversion bulb on a HPS ballast running for 16hrs a day on.
With my pepper seedlings they seem to be having the leaf curl thing happening to them. Am I watering too much or am I running the grow light too long or too close to the plant? I have them in those 4 inch plactic pots with miracle grow seeding soil.
Could the soil be too compacted when I planted the seeds?

| When using a soil that supports 3-4" of perched water in a shallow container, a large part of the soil remains saturated for extended periods after a thorough watering. I would look there first for your answer, and then start considering other cultural influences. Of course, additional mechanical compaction or compaction from watering does play a part in water retention. Al |

| I have used Miracle Grow seed starter soil. It sounds like you are leaving your seedlings in the starter for too long. You need to get them into a good growing container mix. Wish I could help with the 400MH but I use florescent lamps. Curt :-) |
