Mothball in compost!

Whilst shredding a pile of garden waste, I was suddenly aware of a strong smell of Mothballs. I knew that it came from a Mothball my wife had put out to deter the Cats, and it got scooped up with some prunings.

I've now got two plastic sacks full of shreddings awaiting to go into a compost bin that smell of Mothballs. After reading about how toxic the chemicals in Mothballs are, are my shreddings no longer fit to compost?

RE: Mothball in compost!

The primary ingrediant in mothballs is naphthalene which is a know class 1 carcinogen. breathing the vapors are known to cause lung cancer and, according to the US Center or Disease Control, it can alter your red blood cells. I would find a hazardous waste disposal site and get rid to that material.
