Mulch or Compost for Slopes

I've been told the finer the mulch the better for slopes.

Any truth to that? I have anywhere between 30-40 degree slopes and I want to chose something that won't wash away(besides stone).

Readily Available Choices...
Standard Shredded hardwood
Double shredded hardwood
Bark mulch
Pine Bark
Hemlock
Soillife organic compost
Father Dom's Compost

Thanks!

I prefer cypress mulch for slopes. It generally doesn't float or wash down the slope in heavy rain.

Cypress mulch isn't available around here (unless you buy bags at a garden center).

Maybe I can compare that to something comparable around here...from what I recall its similar to a basic hardwood mulch but more stringy or strands.

A 30 to 40 degree slope is pretty steep and not many mulches will stay in place in a fairly heavy rain on something that steep without something to hold it. Compost would have a greater tendency to go with the flow on something that steep. If there are no, or very few, trees and shrubs to help stabilize that hill a mulch by itself will not either.

Whass,

Doubt you'll be reading this in the next few hours. GO PACK!!!

I purchase cypress mulch by the bag. Did the math and found there was little savings even here in Georgia by purchasing by the yard. It seems to last well - a lot longer than pine straw - I suggest you try it in a small spot. Let us know, k?

I have to ask what are your plans for the slope?

If you want mulch to stay on a slope, it probably needs to be terraced.

I would suggest coir logs for terracing...

I probably wouldn't use mulch, I would use a netted erosion control blanket. The type of blanket depends upon what you are need it for?

is the slope bare now?

Here are some pics...the worst cases are to the left and to the right of the home.

You probably can't get this up there either, but pine straw is perfect for slopes. We have a hill about the same degree in our yard and have used pine straw effectively there. Now we planted pine trees on the hill, so it is 'self mulching' with fallen pine needles. I don't like pine straw for most beds because it breaks down easily, and will track on your shoes into the house if you work in the beds. For flat beds, I prefer pine bark or pine mulch.
