While I was shoveling the 5' snow drift away from the back door, so I could open it, I found a frozen squirrel under the drift. The squirrel went into the compost pile, right on top of the snow drift that the pile is buried under.

Got out into the garden to start cleaning things up. I added some yukky chard and broccoli leaves, some weeds, coffee grounds, tea bags, salad trimmings, a couple of match sticks, some dryer lint, a couple of paper towels and napkins, a couple of ripped up bread heels and 2 popcicle sticks. MMMMM fudgesicles!

So gross about the squirrel. Poor thing! :( Today, I added egg shells and kiwi skins from breakfast (triying to eat healthier), napkins, and a banana peel. Nancyjane, how well does dryer lint compost? I haven't had great sucess in the past. Kim

Kim, I don't always dump it in. When I think about it I kinda shred it with my hands a bit and mix it in. It's not a regular thing. Nancy

A half gallon of fridge pickles that were hiding in the back of the fridge. 1/2 gallon of kitchen scraps, most were egg shells. I seen rabbit tracks in the snow on top of the pile. The poor thing must be desperate. Curt

Coffee grounds that Starbucks begrudgingly gave me, marigold plants from last year, egg shells, and rain. It's suprisingly warm here today. And Curt, spread out some alfalfa for that little guy! :) Kim

We're finally getting a whole year's rain in a few weeks. All is damp. The unfinished pile went on a new raised lasagna bed, under a euc tree! Keep fingers crossed. New pile started with Slimy fruit salad, UCG, soup fixin's and peels, pulled weeds mostly clover, old wet brown leaves, and my dead winter plants. Today is sunny, rest of the week will be pouring.

The bottom of a bag of chicken feed got wet, so there was moldy feed at the bottom. I dumped the moldy feed into the bin, then shredded the bag and put that in too. I was pretty proud of myself! :-D I will have a lot of dead landscape and garden waste for the compost soon, we had a very hard freeze and a lot died. I think my 8 foot willow acacia may have gone to tree heaven. :-( --Maureen
Can I put THIS in my compost pile ???
| | |
I have several used Little Hotties Hand Warmers. Please, no lecture on 'going green', wearing gloves or using a hot water bottle. I care for dying patients and the importance of warm hands when touching someone is crucial. Carrying one of these in my pocket for a quick hand warm up has worked well. The ingredients in one small hand warmer is iron powder, water, salt, activated charcoal and vermiculite. As most of the ingredients would be safe, I wondered primarily about the iron powder and that little bit of salt and if they would be safe additions for compost.

A huge amount of rejected alpaca fiber that was left over when I combed out some fleeces in preparation for spinning.

I was wondering, can you felt fibers that aren't appropriate for spinning? I've just started felting and have been scavenging old wool clothing from the second hand store. I'm not felting anything big, just small decorative pins and things...
Gannie, I asked your question on another forum...

& it seems like the only uncertainty is the salt, especially since it's in the form of potassium chloride, used in chemical fertilizers. Here's one response: "I don't think the iron powder would be a problem. Considering that my husband ingests 3 iron pills every day and I am a believer in if we can eat it we can compost it. Of course we can eat salt, but high concentrations can be bad for people and for soil. So, the salt, could be a problem, if she is composting them in multitudes."

I fed my pile a three pound coffee can full of UCG and banana peels. My grandson came home from fishing with four fish. After cutting off the filets, the carcasses went into a hole deep into the center of the pile. Then they got covered with a bunch of shredded oak leaves. I finished by topping off the pile with the decomposed leaves and hay that my potatoes grew in....even found a couple of small potatoes that survived through the winter. My seedlings can hardly wait to get their roots in the soil I add the finished compost to.

JoePyeWeed -- I'm sure you could felt this fiber, but it will be more likely to be something I'll use if it becomes compost. if I save it for someday learning to felt, I'll just clutter up my life.

Send an email to http://www.warmers.com/ about composting hand warmers and here's the reply I got! Greetings! The contents inside each Warmer packet are natural ingredients and non-toxic. They can be put in a compost pile, however, the fabric packet & plastic package should be thrown away. Thanks, Dan Tkachuk
