After five years trying to get my old garden space going with some small sucess my father has gave me a garden space thats 100 times better than my old one.Question it's right beside a small branch and there's a weird kinda grass that speads by roots and it takes over this garden unless you absolutly stay in it.Any suggestions on how to fight this?

RE: New garden space

Digging the garden over and removing by hand every piece of root is the only solution. After digging it once you will find that there is much that you missed, so do it again. Don't plant any perennials until after a few years of annual planting. Always preceded each annual planting by turning over the soil looking for roots.

A lot of work but it can be done in stages. Speaking from experience on this one.

RE: New garden space

I have, all around me, Quack Grass a very invasive grass species that spreads not only by seeds but by rhizomes that will send up new plants about every 4 to 6 inches. Once these rhizomes are cleaned out of a planting bed they can be kept from growing back in by placing a barrier between where they are and the planting bed. I have used 10 inch aluminum flashing inserted vertically while Janet Macunovich writes in "Caring for Perennials" that plastic carpet runner works for her.
