Earthgro Humus and Manure application

Hello, everybody. I am new to gardening and starting a vegetable garden this year. I have amended some of the soil by tilling in composted manure I purchased from Lowe's but I ran out of that.

I picked up several bags of Earthgro Humus and Manure from Wal-Mart to incorporate into my remaining beds. I did not notice initially that the bag said nothing about the manure being composted. Is this safe to work into the soil and then direct sow my seeds into? The bag says it is at least 90% peat and other materials and 10% manure. My soil is heavy clay so I was just trying to add some beneficial organic matter to it. The reason I ask is because I am somewhat concerned about possible contamination of my veggies with pathogens (E.Coli, etc.).

Any input from you more experienced folks would be greatly appreciated.

It's very unlikely that a commercial product would risk any possibility of spreading E. Coli, especially a well-established company like Scotts. If this is their Dehydrated Steer manure, it is likely heated during the process of dehydrating to the point of pasteurization (or beyond). You should have nothing to worry about, but to ease your mind, the link below will take you to a variety of ways to contact the company directly.

Here is a link that might be useful: Ask Scotts

The USDA and the Center fo Disease Control recommend that you allow 90 to 120 days from application of manure to harvesting your crops. If you follow those guidelines, and properly prepare the food from that garden you should have no problem.
The better part of common sense should tell you to not eat any root vegetable directly from your garden but to wash them thoroughly before eating them raw.

Thanks for the replies.

@bi1 1me: I did use the contact link you provided for Scotts and the representative I talked to said that the manure in the Humus and Manure mix is composted.

@kimmsr: Good to know. Do those guidelines also apply to composted manure or is that just for raw? I certainly plan on washing everything well after it comes out of the garden. Haha. C:

not humus

Earthgro Humus and Manure can not be humus if it is made of peat moss, why don't they call it peat moss and manure? See the peat moss thread. I used a few bags of something that was cheaper because it had manure, but I not happy with the results. The soil was not improved. You can only get humus by home composting it.

tropical, define humus.
I have always used this definition of humus, "the residual organic matter left in the soil after the Soil Food Web has stopped digesting it." According to your definition someone could not get any humus in their soil if they never added any home made compost, which is not true.

Yeah, their 'humus' can be any kind of compost.

And the 90% "other ingredients" is not necessarily organic matter. There is usually some soil (sand, silt or clay) mixed in with these products. That said, the sample of this product I tested last year was in the middle of the range on total organic matter. Nothing wrong with it.

To answer your question about whether/when it is safe to use, it's been composted for a period of time before they bagged it. Who knows how long, but I have never worried about using it in the garden and harvesting vegetables a few weeks later. I wash things well to avoid eating compost the same as I would avoid eating dirt. Works for me. :-]
