| But it's been awhile since I've done anything to a lawn and now that I am at a new place, I am trying to get things shaped ups. of course it would have helped if I have put CGM down in the fall, but we had just moved and I was overwhelmed, so now, somewhere behind all the weeds is my dream home ( lol, and I am overwhelmed)! But I digress...
I went and found my "new" feed store and they guy sent me home with West feeds Range Meal 3-1 Mix: A 14% all natural protein salt limiter for breeder cattle on range Now, I had asked for cotton seed mill or soybean mill to fertilize the lawn and I am not sure he gave me the right thing.
Thanks so much,

It sounds like unless you have livestock feed to me. Unless you have livestock I would take it back and look for cottonseed meal. If you asked for fertilizer I don't know what that guy gave you that for. Unless his English is poor he needs to listen better to his customers.

"Please tell me in simple gardeners terms if this is a good pick and what exactly it is? " Can't say "exactly", the seedmeal composition is going to be whatever is the most locally grown to the mill. In my neck o' the woods, it would likely be soy, no cotton around here. But 14% protein tells you what you need to know...it's a fertiliser. IIRC, protein is synonymous with N but someone will correct me no doubt. Not sure about the "salt limiter" part. Perhaps send West feeds an e-mail?

You have ask for salt free, some feeds that you buy will have some sodium supplements. What does the ingredients list say... When buying grains look for 100% cottonseed meal, or whatever meal that you are buying.

Thanks everyone! Yeah, I am taking it back. I DID ask for cottonseed mill or soybean mill..I always feel like I am about 10 years old when I go into the feed stores (even though I have been gardening for 15 years) and get a bit intimidated by the ol farm guys that try to convince me that organic is not the way to go. Not an option. Maybe I will give them another go and if not, I can drive a bit farther and go to another feed store where they don't blow me off and give me whatever. Of course it was my fault for not looking at the bag until I got home. :( Thanks again!

ladybug, its good that you received responses to your query but for the rest of us who are in the dark about what you're talking about would it be too much to suggest that when speaking about what to do for a lawn that the writer identify the type of grass and the general area or environs we're talking about. That way, other readers might get some help with their questions if it ever came up. And questions about lawns always come up!

Altho I'm not familiar with the product you mention it sounds as if it's a protein supplement feed that has salt included which ensures the cattle will not overfeed on it while on range and not supervised. So it's really not something you want on your lawn. I'd be very cautious of anything those "good ol' boys" at the feed store tell you as they may see you as a greenhorn and be having some fun at your expense. It's been known to happen. I was a greenhorn when I first started raising cattle here and it was a steep learning curve. Takes a few wins at competition before they understand you're no longer in the greenhorn class and they stop the nonsense. In your case I'd nicely explain that if they cannot provide you with the products you need for your garden you'll have to drive to the other feed store for them. Big smile while you say that! They need your business so will likely comply. You can look up feeds by googling and generally see what they are for. They should carry 100% cottonseed or soya meal, or other seed meals that are used in your area. I can't buy cottonseed meal here as the shipping from where it's grown would be too expensive but many other seed meals are available. You can also compare the available protein of each meal with the price and find the best buy for fertilizing that way. I'm not sure if protein exactly equals nitrogen but there is a relationship which I'm sure one of our experts can tell us. I think it will give you a rough idea of the fertilizer value anyhow. Here's a table from the link below which shows the relative values:

I am pretty lucky 'cuz the guy at my feed store recognizes that the protein based fertilizers can be a boon to his business. Its not really "organic" because the feed you are buying isn't necessarily organic, so I call it "protein based" fertilizer".

Well the problem with asking the "feed" store for lawn fertilizer is that they don't deal with that and unless you know exactly the product you want they will try to help you anyway they know how and will probly be wrong Also anytime I bring my off the wall requests to the mill I make sure it is a slow day so they have time to help me Hope you find the right stuff

They don't usually don't stock what I buy. Usually I buy blood meal, corn gluten meal, soybean meal. SO I call ahead, order what I want, and then they call me when its in.

Ok, well I feel stupid! Went back to the feed store today to exchange my "feed" only to find out that there is a little green card attached to the bottom of the bag that indicates what's inside..you guessed it..cottonseed mill just as I had asked for. Apparently all of the bags are the same with detailed info on the bottom. Ah well, at least the "good ol boys" were nice to me and probably had a good laugh at me as well. :)
