Composting paper garbage

I've always composted napkins, paper towels, paper egg cartons, pizza boxes, and other uncoated paper that the recycling doesn't take. I'm wondering if waxed paper is safe to compost...

I do.
Perhaps it takes longer to break down, though I've never noticed a problem.

I don't see why it would be a problem ... shred it and use a hot pile and it should break down eventually.

Safe but slow.

Long ago I read of a process to compost wax which involved covering cardboard with the waste wax, grinding the coated cardboard and composting it with other materials.

Calling the chemists out there: are waxes molecularly similar to oils?

That kind of wax is similar to a mineral oil, just a heavier fraction that is solid at room temp. Not the same as vegetable oil.

Mineral oil and paraffin wax are hydrocarbons, nothing but C and H, whereas veg. oil (or animal fat for that matter) is hydrocarbon chains with fatty acid (COOH) groups on the ends.

Food grade waxes are non-toxic and shouldn't hurt the compost. Very similar to what they spray apples and cukes with too.
