Galvanized chicken wire for compost bin?

I bought a 50 foot roll of galvanized chicken wire at Lowes tonight, planning on making 5 bins out of it. When I got it home, I noticed a sticker on it "California Proposition 65" and a warning that the product contains substances that may cause cancer. Does anyone know what this is about? Is it something that will leach into my compost? I am all organic, so this concerns me.

It is true...... if you eat the wire, you will die of cancer... no-doubt ;-)

But as far as composting with it, I think you'll be fine, we have some wonderful people in this forum that should be able to give you some intellectual reasonings, that will provide you some peace of mind.

My concern with chicken wire is that it isn't very durable and will get bent out of shape really easily. Better to use stock wire mesh or some type of welded mesh fencing. Of course those will cost more but dealing with light chicken wire is no fun.

California has really strict laws on chemicals/metals and there possibly is lead or some other metal somewhere in that fencing. Not likely to cause a problem in your compost but you might find some info at the link below.

Here is a link that might be useful: California Proposition 65

Galvanized metal has Zinc in it which in large amounts can be a problem. I found, many years ago, that chicken wire just was not sturdy enough for containing compost which is why I tell people to use 12 feet of 2 x 4 welded wire fence fabric.
