80 Gallon Lifetime Tumbler at Costco - $99!

Hi everyone... I couldn't sleep last night and was on these boards for hours. I saw that everyone was excited about Costco posting a tumbler composter back in 2009. Just wanted to spread the word that there is a new one at Costco online and in stores for $99. An 80 gallon tumbler! I was so excited that I found such an awesome deal! We bought it last weekend and put it together in about two hours.

Note: It is $179.99 on the web site - but it is only $99 if you buy it in the store. You can call and ask your local Costco, but be warned, their policy is not to give prices over the phone. That said, just ask them to 'confirm that it's $99', rather than tell you the price. A quick Internet search will show you this tumbler pricing for $150 - $200, sometimes plus shipping!

Last tip... if you don't have a Costco membership... they used to allow you to use a gift card without buying a membership - paying any of your balance in cash or their other accepted forms of payment. I did this for about a year before I finally broke down and bought a membership! I'm guessing they still do this. So, to confirm, call your local Costco first and tell them someone gave you a gift card but you don't have a membership and ask what their policy is. If they let you use it - just buy a Costco gift card at some other location or buy the card there - and go back and use it the next day. Save yourself the pricey membership fee for a one-time purchase!

Sounds like a deal.
If you are a member of Costco & not a salesman(get a lot of SPAM here), then post how good the tumbler composter works in a week or two. Photos are nice.

LOL. I'm not a salesperson - just an excited consumer! :) Here is a pic of ours.

Besides, if I were a salesperson, I wouldn't be telling you how to get around their membership fee. Think they probably frown upon that. ;)

Even at $99.00 this is an expensive thing to buy, and may not be large enough to do the job that is required. 12 feet of 2 x 4 mesh welded wire fence fabric 4 feet high is much less expensive and is of a good size for making compost, if a containment system is even needed.

I thought it was a good buy and worth passing on - especially for those of us who live in suburban sub-division locations. There's not much you can do outside of your house without approval from the board. Exposed compost bins is one of them.

Would someone please explain to me how these things can possibly compost effectively? No worms can get to them, and it would seem the only composting critters are flying bugs, molds, and bacteria. Do these things really work as effectively as touching-the-ground composters?

I bought it last year just because i had rats and could not add kitchen scraps just to compost.
Well, i don't like it.
At first, it does not have handle and difficult to rotate.
Second, very soon something broke inside and it does not rotate at all. I will need to empty it soon and see what needs to be fixed.

I have an old tumbler I got at the dump for $5. I add all of my stuff and tumble every few days, then when things start breaking down, dump everything into my on-ground compost bin to finish. It does seem to speed up the process and I still have my worms to help out=). Start all over again! Nancy
