Acidic soil and new St. Augustine

We recently laid St. Augustine sod. I know I should have spread lime before we laid the grass. We did spread topsoil mixed with a little bit of mushroom compost. Is it okay to spread lime over the newly laid sod? Grass has been down for 2 weeks.

You don't state where you are or what kind of soil you have, but I would guess deep south or Florida somewhere. St Augustine will do fine in acidic soil, actually prefers it from everything I have read. No lime needed. Don't waste your money on lime. Adding organic matter or compost would benefit your new sod long term.

St. Augustine grows quite well in soils with a pH range of 5.0 to 5.8, although it will be chlorotic at pHs above 7.5. Whether you should add lime, or anything else depends on the results of a soil test.

What IS the pH of the soil?

You should never, ever add lime without knowing with some certainty what the pH levels are in your soil. Work with your extension office on taking and sending in some samples for an accurate reading.
