I am looking to buy some good Quality Compost. I live in Staten Island N.Y. the only thing I can find is the bagged stuff. I am going to start to make my own, But it wont be ready for some time. I guess New Jersey, will be the best place. If anyone knows where I can Purchase, it would be appreciated. Thanks Joe

You can't really buy good compost. It has no shelf life and it could bring in new diseases to your garden. If someone was making it and selling it on craigslist they would have to sterile it, therefore removing anything that you would want to get rid of bad things. So just buy some bagged and use that, then make your own to start good thing culturing then add that to what you bought. If you hot compost you can be done in as little as two week or a month if the weather is hot.

"You can't really buy good compost." Balderdash. Of course you can. Lloyd

I mean in urban areas such as New York.

I think I might call the helpline (or send an email) to the New York City Staten Island division of the city's composting operation. Apparently they sometimes hold spring and fall events to give compost back to the city residents. If they can't set you up with some compost directly, they should know where to get some quality stuff locally! :)

I read that you have to be careful of the leaves you use in your compost. The compost in NY is made from leaves and most homes use chemicals on there lawn. So I would prefer another source for my compost. Thanks

What you really mean is to be careful of mystery *grass clippings*. That can definitely be a problem. Trees don't get sprayed with lawn stuff and the tree roots generaly don't take up much of what't put on the lawn. Always good to know where your grass clippings come from and what the homeowners use on their lawn.

I would never take city compost. You have no idea what could be in there. I looked at the link and it said, they do not give compost away to residences anymore. It seems like in New York everyone has to do their own composting. I don't think they have a city wide collection. This will not work out for people who live in high rise building with no yards or gardens. What are people supposed to do? Make compost in the house. That would smell and then what? Do they take the compost to central park and bury it? They used to collect leaves in the fall and compost them, but now they don't even do that. Funding has run out. The best compost is the one you make from fruit and vegetables peels. If I could sell mine, that would be great, but I rather use it myself. I would have to sell it for quite a lot to off set the cost of the bagged browns I need to keep it all going.

I took the liberty of calling the NYC compost helpline and asking them for local sources of organic compost. When/if they ring me back, I'll post what they tell me here.
I found some in san jose

I was really surprised to see that compost was for sale in San Jose. So, it could be possible to find some in the New York area if one wanted to drive out to a more rural area to pick it up. I just don't know if that compost would be up to my high standards. I know whole foods throws out tons of fruits and vegtables, but I bought a bag of there "compost" and it was just pieces of bark, kind of like the new super soil in the bag. It was the worst thing ever. I am convinced the throw out the fruits and sell us bags of wood masquerading as compost, so I am very cynical about it. I did buy a bag of super soil potting mix recently and it was all bark. I planted the plant anyway and the plant did terrible, I had to repot in better soil. I used miracle grow and it better. Super soil was great in the 1970 before it got bought by a big corporation. My grandmother was a super gardener and that was what she swore by. I would just hate to see someone pay a lot for compost and get a bunch of bark instead.

Does anyone, besides me, find it ironic that someone who is very selective about the quality of their compost would fine miracle grow products acceptable?
RE: Looking for Compost

Hey, miracle gro makes fine products, even if they do represent the debbil incarnate! :-]
RE: Looking for Compost

Miracle grow soil is better then supersoil for containers. I need some container soil as garden soil does poorly in containers and there are only two brand to pick from seriously Miracle grow or supersoil brand. I rarely do containers at all. I am not totally happy with the miracle grow, but I don't what could make it better.
