| I have a current 12x8 plot, and am wishing to add another one of the same size right next to it (its just grass there right now). My original plan was to throw down some compost and composted manure, till it all in with the grass, and go from there.
But the more I read on here, the more I'm prompted not to till. I understand why it may be better not to, but how would I get the compost into the soil since it's a new plot? Also, what would I lay down to kill the grass, and for how long? Right now there is no snow, but it's wet, and the grass is dead. And I have 2+ months before I need to start planting. Either way, I'm elated to double my planting space! :D |

| Your grass is dormant, not dead. The simplest way to prepare a new garden plot is to lay newspaper, or cardboard, over the area and cover that with the compost and other organic matter, to hide the paper and hold it in place. Depriving the grass, and anything else growing there will kill it and the Soil Food Web will move the compost and other organic matter into the soil for you. Even with tilling you should wait a few weeks afterwards before planting to give the soil time to settle, and you should not till until the soil is workable, while you could lay the paper down just about anytime there is no snow on it. |

| The only reason I might till first is to expedite the process, if there is heavy thatch, tilling would make the process go faster, after you break up your grass, cover it completely with totally saturated cardboard, pile on the compost, and you are golden... |
