Is it necessary to shred kitchen scraps?

Is it necessary to shred kitchen scraps or can I just throw them onto the pile as is? Some of the scraps are large, such as big pieces of watermelon rind or whole potatoes that have gotten soft and are no longer suitable for food.

Nope. They'll probably be eaten faster if chopped, but it's not necessary. I toss in whole potatoes all the time. Often I find potato plants growing from them in the pile. Turn that in, and it gets eaten too.

Re: watermelon rind. Anything with that much water goes away really quickly. I often cut up 2 or 3 melons for family gatherings, and the rinds are unrecognizeable in a matter of weeks. :-)

Agree - anything watery goes fast. I might cut a potato in half to expose the inner tissue, but no more than that.

g'day jolynn,

nope! we tuck our waste under the mulch in the garden where it does the most good, the worms love it that way.

The smaller the pieces, the faster they break down, but not necessary.
I do chop things up and scrunch egg shells when I have the time, but don't stress on it. Nancy

I scrunch eggshells and cut some of the larger stuff like rinds in half or quarters. Corn cobs get broken into 3 pieces since they compost very slowly and I don't want to mess with them. Otherwise very little effort goes into kitchen waste.
