Dead ornamental grass cuttings as mulch?

| I have a lot of ornamental grass around my property. I usually wait until spring to cut it back and leave it for the birds to eat the seeds in the winter.
Could I spread the dead ornamental grass around, as a mulch? I think it would be just like mulching with straw. It would save me a lot of labor since I wouldn't have to carry the cuttings away. |

| I do. If you can, try to shred them with the lawn mower. Sometimes my clumps are so thick, I can't get the mower over them. So I clip them down first and then run them over with a mower, to shred them up. Then I rake/blow the mulched clipping back on to the bed. Often times, after I've got everything shredded and raked neatly into place, I douse the entire bed down with the hose, which helps keep it from blowing around. Once its wet down, then it doesn't move much. |

| If the birds haven't eaten every last seed you will be spreading those seeds around your garden altho if you use a thick layer of newspaper or cardboard under the grass clippings the seedlings probably won't survive. |

| I leave my grass up all winter for the birds too. Normally, the seed heads are long gone or empty by spring. |

| My clumps are huge, I have to cut them down with electric hedge trimmers, I can't even cut them down by hand. I tried a machete on them and that wouldn't cut through them either. My seed heads are totally empty or completely gone. The stuff is pretty much like straw. I'm going to spread it around and safe myself some trouble. If the grasses spread, oh well, at least they're not weeds! |

| Absolutely you can use that grass as mulch. There are some places here that find it easier to cut the stands down in the spring using a chain saw. |

| I use my electric hedge trimmer to cut up the ornamental grass into smaller pieces and use it as mulch in my veggie garden over the winter and then again in the spring. Free mulch - what's not to like! |

By a lot you mean a half of acre or more, you can cut stripes in the grass. Use this as green manure in the Summer & it will grow back by Fall. |
