Where did my Rice Krispies go?!?

| Has anyone else ever added Rice Krispies to their compost pile? I found a very old, open box at the back of the pantry and have been randomly throwing handfuls in my cold piles and find that they're completely gone within a day! I was hoping that they'd help soak up a little of the moisture that came from the thawing snow, but holy cow, never had something disappear so quickly! I guess I shouldn't be too surprised - look at how quickly they go soggy and mushy in a bowl of milk.
Anyways, just proves that compost never ceases to amaze :)

Don't you think that birds or squirrels are eating them?

In a hot pile things like that will break down in just one day, if you bury them.

I'm still amazed that the pit from an avocado disappeared in a day or two. I turned my whole pile 2 days after putting the pit and peels in and didn't see a sign of either.

More likely you're feeding the local wildlife and not your soil. It's not likely that things are active enough in zone 2b to decompose that quickly.

My "bins" are currently rubbermaid totes with small holes drilled in them (we just moved in at the beginning of winter and I haven't had a chance to build permanent bins yet)and I keep the lids on, so it's definitely not wildlife eating them :)

An avocado pit will stay around for years. Pits will not breakdown, but cereal with milk is already mostly broken down to begin with.

The average compost pile has insects in it as well as microbes, and they can chew up larger quantities of tasty stuff pretty quick.

I'm still betting that somewhere nearby there is a happy crowd of ants (or something that size) happily munching under a sign that says "Breakfast Served All Day!"

Haha well I guess no matter where they're going, I'm disposing of them without making more garbage which is part of my whole goal, so go ahead little ants, enjoy that breakfast and stay tuned for some extra cold coffee in the morning!
