| I think I have made a mistake....no news there, right? About three months ago I put a new lasagna bed right up against the trunk under a huge euc. Haven't planted in it yet, was waiting for April. I read somewhere on GW that this is likely to kill the tree. Been all over trying to find the thread again, but no luck.
I'm wondering if I should dismantle the bed (no heavy borders, no construction, just logs around layers of lasagna). It should be all nice and ready to shovel over to another new bed and it really won't be hard to relocate, but if my info is correct, it's a poor site choice. The euc doesn't shade it too much as it's over 4 stories tall. Planting time is here and I wanna get down and dirty, but something tells me I have to move the bed. Thoughts?

| It could kill the tree because the tree will no longer be able to exchange gases. At the bottom of the trunk there is usually a flare where you might see surface roots; this is where the exchange takes place. |

| I consider Eucs to almost be 'weed trees' ... grow with little encouragement and endure poor conditions. About a year ago, I dug a deep pit below one of my eucs ... filled with brush and trimmings and topped with horse manure and innoculated it with composting worms. However, in no time at all the entire worm 'bed' was FILLED with a heavy thatch of roots. .... So, I'm guessing that your lasagna bed will soon be filled with euc roots and good luck to your plants. |
