how do you shred?

Neighbors and I are thinking about going in together on some creature to shred our wet old leaves, corn husks, etc. I'd like to even be able to put eggshells in it. Any thoughts on the best machine? We were first looking into leaf shredders but I'm thinking they won't handle anything but nice dry leaves, no twigs even...

You can use the in house search to check threads over the last few years.

Here is a link that might be useful: leaf shredder

Every fall, I rake the leaves from our maple tree into a long windrow, and shred them with a rotary lawnmower, one equipped with a mulching blade. The clean up takes an hour or two, the actual shredding might take 10 minutes. Pulling the mower backwards seems to keep most of the leaves from being blown about. It takes multiple passes to complete the process. Shredded tree leaves consistently compost in 6 months or so.

That was my dilemma for a while because I live in a townhouse. I don't have room for large equipment. Then I just started running over leaves with our electric lawnmower. It's time-consuming, but gets the job done until I can come up with a better way. I store the shredded leaves in large lawn bags until I need to add some to the pile.

Not sure if this is the smartest thing to do, but one year I laid a thin layer of leaves and straw down before I added soil and ammendments on top. It was a little tough planting, but by the next year, everything had decomposed. Turned out nice. Maybe similar to lasagna beds?

Regardless, I didn't have to worry about shredding (and i got them from the neighbors, pre packaged in pumkin bags from the halloween before.) Score.

The Tool forum usually has more info on this question than the Compost forum. Use the 'Search' feature, try 'shred' and 'shredder'.

If you're shredding leaves take a 30 gal plastic garbage container and fill about 25% with dry leaves. Stick a weedwacker into the container. Turn it on for 30 sec and pretend you're making a leafshake. Shred lots or just a little. The more powerful the machine the more you can include small twigs and plant stems. Works great with dry straw also. The container captures the dust, so no sneezing involved. I actually use a cordless wacker. All you need is a 5X5 ft area to do your shreding.

I was given a leaf shredder/sucker at a yard sale and I LOVE it! I go to all the neighbors' houses and collect their leaves to shred a few as I need them. It only handles very small twigs, though.
