Composting the cotton from a futon?

Hi everyone,

A while back we made the mistake of buying a very poorly made futon. It is so hard and uneven that it's impossible to sleep on -- but... the cotton inside it is organic.

I've tried to give it away thinking someone might want to use the cotton for some sewing project, but no one seems to want it.

So, since I'm running short on fallen leaves and haven't been very good about making the time to go collect more, I'm wondering if I can use the cotton from inside the futon as my "browns".

Has anyone had any experience with this? What do you think?

Thanks!

Linda

RE: Composting the cotton from a futon?

The woman I bought my worms from covered them in a slab of cotton from an old futon. They ate it in a matter of months. As far as composting: it should work fine if you can keep it from clumping up. I can't imagine it would work well in a bin. If you live in a moist climate and have the right kind of worms on your property, you could make it the base of a pile on the ground, cover with yard waste, keep moist, and let the worms go at it.

Good luck!
