 o
moldy soil added to compost bin???

I don't know why some of my soil I started seedlings with got mold. I was going to throw it out, but my husband told me to throw it to the compost bin. The mold is actually helping the compost bin getting composted quicker. I understand the theory of what he said, but I am not sure if the mold from the soil is the same or not harmful to the compost pile.

Please explain. Thanks

The mold got there because it was already present just like all those other happy microbes in the compost bin. When I get mold, I just figure I made the conditions right for it grow - typically I'll over water.

The mold is just another occupant in your compost bin.

I don't know that I'd throw oodles of soil in the bin. Some people like throw some in because it brings the soil microbes into the bin but I don't bother. I figure there's enough on the wind.

So, it won't hurt. I just don't know if it will do much for your compost. Your milage may vary.

two cents
