Will Trade for Compost

Hi all,
I'm looking to buy or trade for compost for my garden beds this year. I Need 1 yard total...does not have to be all from one person/place/source. Sooner the better, if possible, I've got a lasagna bed that needs a couple months of help before I may be able to plant it.

Thank you.

Try pet stores bunny bedding, ask if they can put it on the side for you. If you are near a zoo, elephant dung, horse poo, any non-meateaters poo. Stables and farmers bedding and poo, Used coffee grounds, I've been getting some from a donut shop. Some starbucks will give them away. Fall leaves shredded. Bunny poo is one of the best non hot garden fertilizers. Also chicken crap of course needs composted. As far as finished compost, I don't know. Some areas have public facilities where you can just go get it for free. If my little town has one yours should.

With gas at nearly $4 a gallon, I don't think it would be feasible for you to make the drive down to Tennessee for some of my brown gold.

I did a basice Google search for Hudson, NY Garden Centers and came up with a few places that you might want to check.

Heck, there's a Lowe's nearby and they carry compost.

There is a Freecycle group for Columbia County, if you're not familiar you can learn about it at freecycle.org. It's a Yahoo group and you could post a request for compost or compost materials.

There is also a Craigslist for Albany, I searched and found many listings for compost for sale. Maybe there would be someone near you. Craigslist also has a Wanted section.

Good luck!

Hi everyone :)

Thank you for all the help! I'm shocked by how generous and truly helpful everyone on this site is. Puts some of my faith back into humanity just a little. Or maybe it's just that Gardener's are a special type of people.

Anyway! I have checked out Freecycle for Albany, NY and Columbia County and also Craigslist. Nothing on Craigslist except the e-mail to a lady selling Chickens who I'm going to ask for some of her Poo...lol probably one of the weirdest e-mails I've ever sent. Freecycle hasn't popped anything yet, but still hoping.

As for going and buying from a landscaper, I was trying to avoid that since I bought some vegetable plants from a couple last spring and they all ended up with some kind of virus thingy! Every one! The plants I started had no issues, and I was lucky enough to quarantine mine away from the sickly ones. When I asked about what they pot in, they said they all share compost and such locally with the town and other landscapers! So I'm wary, to say the least.

Will keep calling though. Maybe I can find some good stuff nearby.

@tn_gardener - I was down in Tennesee last summer for the NASCAR Bristol Race. You are a very lucky person to live in such a gorgeous place. Maybe I can bus down! That would be one interesting checked bag! :-D

Thank you again everyone!
Warm Regards
~jr

You should try posting on craigs list. But, consider that you don't know what that free compost could contain. It could have some plant diseases.

Guess I'm lucky. We have a mushroom factory 30 miles away - $35 a truck full (about 2 yards). A couple horse farms let me have all the aged manure I want. My 4 chickens poop every single day :-) My neighbor gives me his bagged leaves. And you might be surprised at how quickly the coffee grounds mount up at just 2 pots of coffee per day (1 at the house & 1 at the office).

You ought to be able to find some horse manure to go with the chicken poop. Might not work out for this year, but that ought to get you started on some nice compost for summertime side dressing and/or the Fall.

There's always the peat moss n Black Kow stuff that you can amend your soil with.
