leaf molding

This is a one year old pile. It's volumn is reduced by half, but its nowhere near ready to use as a potting soil.

If you remove the top layer and p;lace it in another bin, you might find the lower part of the pile is very well composted.

The leaves are not composted, They are molding and will be ready in another year of so.

Molding is a form of composting, just a slow cold form.

ok call it what you like. I push the idea of mold because the way nature handles leaves is different from the way it handles manures and food wastes which are broken down primarily with bacteria.
